How to fix “Device eth0 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization.”

After clone the VM within Virtual box, I receive this error message “Device eth0 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization.” when start the network service.

The /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 does exist. The issue is that the network device eth0 is non longer exist. The VM clone processes create the new device eth1.

The device file is at /sys/class/net.

To check network adapter, type ip link show

Btw, We can rename the device by using command ip link set eth1 name eth0. Then to check you adapter again by typing ip link show

To bring up your eth0 adapter type ifup eth0. But you may get below error.

This mean, your eth0 still using the old MAC address. So change your MAC address to the new one. To check your new MAC address, again, type ip link show

To change you MAC address, vi /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcofg-eth0.

Replace your old MAC addr (mine is 08:00:27:02:C0:1F) to your new MAC Addr (my new MAC addr is 08:00:27:83:C8:AA). Save the file.

Again type ifup eth0 to bring up your eth0 with new MAC addr. If you fill your MAC addr correctly you will get below output.

Then reload your network with service network restart. If get below output, then you are done.

To verify your network is working with internet or not, try ping any public DNS. For google public dns you can try ping If you get below output, that is mean your server is up and running with internet.
